The Maryland ACEP Fellowship & Advocacy Program

The MDACEP Leadership & Advocacy Fellowship is designed to develop early-career emergency physicians into leaders in emergency medicine. The fellowship combines elements of mentoring with skills in organization, education, advocacy, and involvement.

Overview

Key components of the MDACEP Leadership & Advocacy Fellowship include:

  • Leadership development through one-on-one mentorship, active participation in the MDACEP Board of Directors, and engagement in advocacy-driven projects.
  • Empowering early-career emergency physicians to take an active role in leading state and national advocacy initiatives on behalf of emergency physicians and the patients they serve.
  • Building lasting relationships with influential leaders in emergency medicine and health policy at both the state and national levels.

Criteria for Fellowship Acceptance

Any member of the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (MDACEP) may nominate themselves or another eligible resident member for this Fellowship.

Emergency physicians currently completing or planning to pursue other fellowships are also eligible to apply.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current member in good standing of MDACEP
  • Have a minimum of three years of membership in ACEP or EMRA
  • Have completed an emergency medicine residency within the past 10 years, or are currently in your final year of residency (Fellowship participation would begin after residency graduation)

The application process is competitive. Applicants will be chosen by the MDACEP Board of Directors based on their contributions to the emergency medicine community and their demonstrated potential for future emergency medicine leadership.

MDACEP will award a stipend of $1,500 to the chosen Resident.

Roles and Responsibilities of the MDACEP Leadership & Advocacy Fellow

The selected Fellow will actively participate in the following activities:

  • Utilize the Fellowship travel stipend to attend MDACEP events in person whenever possible. (View the Calendar of Events here)
  • Attend at least three MDACEP Board of Directors meetings (primarily via Zoom).
  • Participate in the MDACEP Legislative Committee.
  • Attend the MDACEP Legislative Reception in Annapolis (January).
  • Represent MDACEP at the ACEP Leadership & Advocacy Conference (late April/early May; approximately 3 days).
  • Serve as an Alternate Councillor at the ACEP Council Meeting during ACEP’s annual conference.
  • Author two articles for EMinMD (the MDACEP newsletter) to promote future Leadership Fellowship opportunities and encourage chapter engagement.

Application Process

The MDACEP Leadership & Advocacy Fellowship is a competitive opportunity. Fellows will be selected by the MDACEP Board of Directors based on their demonstrated commitment to emergency medicine and their potential to grow as leaders within the specialty.

Upon selection, each Fellow will be paired with a mentor from the MDACEP Board of Directors to provide guidance throughout the Fellowship year.

Each Fellow will receive a $1,500 travel and participation stipend to support their involvement in Fellowship activities.
